Loi Krathong: The Festival of Lights
Loi Krathong, one of the most popular festivals of Thailand, is
celebrated annually on the full-moon day of the twelfth lunar month.
Loi Krathong dates back to the time of the Sukhothai Kingdom (Thailand),
about 700 years ago, and it marked the end of the rainy season and
the main rice harvest. Its name comes from the words “Loi,”
which means “to float” and “Krathong,” a
lotus-shaped vessel made of banana leaves.
Every November, we celebrate Loi Krathong at Cha
Da Thai, and hope you will join us.
Thank you for joining us!
Walsh Sisoukrath and Staff
Please keep Cha Da Thai in mind for all your holiday celebrations.
Our “Zodiac Room” is available for private parties.
Thai
Holiday Celebrations
The Thai year is full of festive holidays that are celebrated
with tradition and delicious foods.
APRIL
13 – 16, 2006 SONGKRAN: The Water Festival
Traditional Thai New Year
April 13,14, and 15
(Sawatdii Pimai) -- Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! April 13 -15 is the traditional Thai new year.
The dates were originally determined astrologically, but are now
the same dates every year. For centuries, the Thai New Year was
the legal and official beginning of the year in Thailand. Now,
however, January 1 is considered the actual beginning of the year,
but Songkran, our traditional new year, is still celebrated and
is a national holiday.
Songkran is all about water. Songkran occurs during the hottest
time of the year in Thailand, at the end of the dry season, so
it makes sense that water is so important. The most noticeable
celebration is the throwing of water. People roam the streets
with bowls of water, squirt guns or even garden hoses, and drench
one other and passersby. This tradition originated in the water
purification ceremony, in which the Buddha images in the temples
are cleaned. In many cities, the Buddha statues from all parts
of the city are paraded through the streets, so that people can
throw water on them as they pass.

Reviews:

“A Thai Treat:
Chada Thai might just become your new favorite restaurant.
In a city where good ethnic food has long been in short supply,
this new Thai restaurant on Jonestown Road adds real flavor.
Owner Walsh Sisoukrath has created a lovely place, with a templelike
arch over the front desk and wooden cross-hatched dining room
walls…. Service at Cha Da Thai is one of its most attractive
features, and the staff (which at night dresses in traditional
Thai clothing) is gracious, informed and discreet.” *To
